To the Heavens and Back

Chapter 1

'Congratulations.' He was startled as the message blinked at him. He didn't think word would have gotten around yet. But apparently the grapevine of this small town was too slick. He had never liked that. His privacy was too precious to him. All he wanted was all doors to the outside world to shut around him, so he could live and breathe in peace.

But he can't totally ignore every human wanting to interact with him, can he. 'Thank you!' He typed back. Didn't want to come across rude to someone he hadn't seen or talked to in years. He had often seen her around on the social media, and that was about it. They have been acquaintances from far. Commitments bought in unexpected visitors. He smirked at that.

'So who is she?' Well well. The truth was well hidden. Inside a web of promises. And he was taking that to the grave. But let the world misunderstand this as the biggest love story of the century. That's the only way he could hide the biggest secret. That is the only way he could really define it to the outside world.

'Soon to be mine.' A smiley should make it more convincing. All he knew about her was that she had been happily committed for as long as he could remember. Not that far away when he would soon be promoted to that category himself. Maybe they would have something in common to talk about. Maybe she could tell him the secret to committed happiness that pulled you through life.

She smiled at the phone screen. People in love made her happy. And she made sure that happiness was well recognized. A moral support for something as grand as true love. So she had wanted to wish him. She knew more about his story than he had let on. Yes she had heard every detail on the grapevine and yes she believed it to be the biggest love story of the century. And love stories always made her wish she could have one too.

Somehow the exchange of messages spiralled longer than it should have. For both felt that familiarity wash over them as each message went through.

The day ended. But hope didn't.
